Death by compassion
Abstract
What it is euphemistically called the right to die is not a right nor something worthy. The autonomy of the person has been considered as the foundation to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia, however the decision adopted by the Court in this sense does not reaffirm the autonomy. It rather changes public policies; thus, it protects those who are more vulnerable. The message that this decision gives is that law and society think that it is acceptable to kill a person who asks for euthanasia and that it would be killing on his behalf. In Colombia what before was called murdering by compassion, will now be called medical treatment. What is in risk is to recognize that, once the power is granted to kilI, it will not be restricted by norms.
