The Problem of Culture in Freud: From an Archeology of the Unconscious to the Utopia of Reason
Keywords:
Freud, repression, culture, discontent, EnlightenmentAbstract
This article examines Sigmund Freud’s theory of culture. The analysis focuses on the notion of repression and the complications this concept creates for the individual and culture. The author’s theoretical position is discussed and, oscillating between determinism and a total liberation of repression, it is suggested that Freud’s perspective on the discontent in culture is, more exactly, that of an Enlightenment thinker.
