Abstract

This paper presents an introductory note to Stefan Zweig’s work and it does so through the critical analysis of his short novel Buchmendel. In its story, some aspects related to the author’s life can be glimpsed —namely, his nonnationalist europeism. The depiction of its characters also highlights the central issue of Zweig’s novels and essays, that is, the focus on the life of the spirit and a serious warning about the social and personal risks of its absolutization.
