Causes and Functions of Current Expectations in Neuroscience
Keywords:
Sociology of Neuroscience, Neuroscientific beliefs, Expectations in Neuroscience, NeuroethicsAbstract
The advances made over the past two decades in the study of neuronal system and in the development of neuro-technology seem to justify the high expectations in this field. However, more and more authors are criticizing, from inside and outside Neuroscience, that such optimism is excessive and results in a dangerous neuro-essentialism. In this paper, we analyze the origin and role of neuroscientific expectations. We conclude that, first, the main causes are not scientific evidences and theories, as is commonly thought, and second, this precisely generalized false belief undermines scientific and social progress.
